Print Care Guide - How to Wash Your Customised Apparel?

Keep your custom prints fresh for longer. You've got your hands on a top-quality, custom-printed tee — now let’s make sure it stays looking sharp for as long as possible. Like anything worth keeping, a little care goes a long way. By following these easy tips, you’ll extend the life of your garment and reduce your environmental footprint at the same time.

Wash Smart

  • Wash cold, inside out: Always use a cold, gentle cycle and turn garments inside out. This protects the print from friction and heat damage.
  • Wash with similar colours: Mixing colours can lead to bleeding or dulling. Group similar tones together for best results.
  • Use mild detergent: Skip harsh chemicals, bleach, and fabric softeners. They can break down prints and harm fabrics.
  • Wait till the machine's full: Filling your machine properly (but not overstuffing it) helps conserve energy and water, and prevents garments from rubbing against each other excessively.

Dry with Care

  • No tumble dryers: Heat is a print’s worst enemy. Let your garments air dry instead — preferably out of direct sunlight.
  • Hang dry straight from the wash: This helps reduce wrinkles and avoids the need for ironing.

Ironing & Heat

  • Don’t iron over the print: If ironing is needed, do it inside out or place a clean cloth over the printed area.
  • Avoid dry-cleaning: Most of our garments don’t require dry-cleaning, and traditional dry-cleaning chemicals are rough on both your clothes and the planet.

Spot Clean When You Can

Got a stain? Tackle it quickly with spot cleaning. It saves water, protects the whole garment, and gives you a better shot at saving that favourite tee.

Protecting the Planet While You Wash

  • Microplastics matter: Synthetic fabrics like polyester can shed microplastics into waterways during the wash. If you’re washing anything synthetic, consider using a Guppyfriend washing bag to capture these particles.
  • Cooler is kinder: Most modern detergents are effective in cool water. Lower temps protect your clothes and the environment.

What’s That Yellow Mark?

Noticed a faint yellow mark around your print? No stress — it’s just a fixation mark from the print curing process. A cold wash will sort it out in no time.

End-of-Life: What to Do When It’s Worn Out

When your garment’s been through it all — gigs, games, brunches, and lazy Sundays — it doesn’t have to end up in landfill. Here’s how to give it a second life:

Reuse or Repurpose

  • Turn it into cleaning rags
  • Cut into fabric strips for crafts or gardening ties
  • Use it as stuffing or lining

Donate or Recycle

  • Donate to op shops or second-hand clothing bins
  • Look for local textile recycling services

Compost (for natural fibres only)

If your garment is made from 100% natural fibres like organic cotton:

  • Cut off zips, tags, or synthetic stitching
  • Shred the fabric into smaller pieces
  • Mix into your compost bin or bury in the garden (2 parts soil to 1 part fabric)

With the right conditions, it’ll return to the earth within a year.

Final Tip

Take care of your print, and it’ll take care of you. Better care = longer wear. Not only will you save money, but you’ll help reduce waste and support a more sustainable fashion cycle.
